Hundreds were killed and thousands injured after militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7. In response, Israel has launched thousands of air strikes in Gaza, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling for a “full siege.”

The Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war surpassed 10,000, including more than 4,100 children and 2,640 women, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza.

More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.

The war that began Oct. 7 has become the deadliest of five Gaza wars for both sides.

Here’s what that looks like in maps and graphics.

Israel-Hamas war - Nov. 6

Israeli troops divided the northern and southern parts of Gaza, as communications across the besieged territory were temporarily cut Monday for a third time since the war started. The troops are expected to enter Gaza City on Monday or Tuesday, Israeli media reported.

The Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war surpassed 10,000, including more than 4,100 children and 2,640 women, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza.

The developments came after Israeli airstrikes hit two refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday, killing scores of people, health officials said. Israel has so far rejected U.S. suggestions that it take a humanitarian pause from its relentless bombardment of Gaza and the rising civilian deaths.

In the occupied West Bank, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids. More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that started the fighting, and 242 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by the militant group.

Roughly 1,100 people have left the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing since Wednesday under an apparent agreement among the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar, which mediates with Hamas.

Israel’s ground troops were advancing toward Gaza City as diplomatic efforts intensified for at least a brief pause in the fighting in Gaza’s deadliest war.

U.S. President Joe Biden suggested a humanitarian “pause” and Secretary of State Antony Blinken is expected back in the region on Friday. Arab countries, including those allied with the U.S. and at peace with Israel, have expressed mounting unease with the war.

The opening of the Rafah border crossing, allowing hundreds of foreign passport holders and wounded Palestinians to leave Gaza, followed weeks of talks among Egypt, Israel, the U.S. and Qatar, which mediates with Hamas.

The Israeli military says its troops and tanks briefly entered northern Gaza overnight into Thursday, marking the third Israeli raid since the war began more than two weeks ago. Airstrikes have ravaged swaths of the Gaza Strip during that time — leaving it looking like a wasteland from space — and residents are running out of food, water and other supplies.

The conflict in the Middle East is in its 14th day.

Israel is bombarding Gaza and evacuating a sizable town near the Lebanese border in the latest sign of a potential ground invasion of Gaza that could trigger regional turmoil.

The Gaza Health Ministry said 3,785 people have been killed in the territory since the war began, the majority women, children and older adults. More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, mostly in the initial attack Oct. 7 when Hamas militants stormed into Israel.

The conflict in the Middle East entered its 13th day. Israel agreed to allow Egypt to deliver limited humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip while the Israeli military kept up its air strikes on the Palestinian territory.

People in need of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip

More than 1 million Palestinians, roughly half of Gaza’s population, have fled homes in the north and Gaza City after Israel told them to evacuate. The airstrikes early Thursday continued across the entire territory, including in areas in the south that Israel had declared as “safe zones.”

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that limited humanitarian aid would be allowed into Gaza from Egypt following a request from U.S. President Joe Biden.

Oct. 18

The conflict in the Middle East entered its 12th day. An explosion on Tuesday at the Al-Ahli Arabi Baptist Hospital in Gaza City killed hundreds of people, according to the Gaza Health Authority, and it is unclear who is responsible. Meanwhile, thousands of people trying to escape Gaza are gathered in Rafah, which has the territory’s only border crossing to Egypt.

U.S. President Joe Biden was in Israel on Oct. 18, but his planned summit with Arab leaders was called off after the hospital attack.

Oct. 16

Israeli bombardments of Gaza intensified ahead of an expected ground invasion, as hopes for a brief ceasefire were dashed.

More than one million people – almost half the total population of Gaza – have been displaced, the United Nations said. Gaza has had no electricity for days, pushing vital services, including health, water and sanitation, to the brink. Food insecurity is also worsening.

The war has claimed more than 4,000 lives since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

Oct. 15

Hundreds of thousands of Gaza residents sought to heed Israel’s order to evacuate roughly the northern half of the territory. Israeli forces positioned themselves along Gaza’s border and drilled for what Israel said would be a campaign by air, land and sea to dismantle the militant group.
